RHS Band Fall Semester Information:

Band camp and new member camp are required for all incoming members. During which time, students will learn standing commands, marching basics, and marching drills and techniques to prepare for the fall season’s show. Also, students participating in the fall season will earn a full semesters PE credit (required 2 years (4 semesters) to graduate).

During the fall semester, the Royal Alliance marching band and color guard perform and compete at many different football games, parades, and competitions. The Royal Alliance compete in 5 tournaments annually. In order to fully prepare for these events, students will have a number of after school and evening rehearsals, as well as some Saturday practices.

Normal marching band rehearsals will occur Monday and Wednesday evenings every week for beginning of school to November, please see the calendar for exact dates and times.

RHS Band Spring Semester Information:

During the spring semester, the Royal Alliance marching band transforms and separates into smaller performance groups. Each group rehearses its own repertoire in preparation for performances. Each group has its own auditions, rehearsal schedule, and performance schedule. In this you will find a brief explanation for each ensemble.

Symphonic Band and Concert Band.

During the spring semester the band divides into two bands. This division allows for players to be grouped with like abilities, and is most conducive to student growth. Symphonic Band is an advanced level ensemble, and Concert Band is an intermediate level ensemble.

Auditions are held after school to determine which students will be placed in symphonic band or concert band. These auditions also function as the final exam for the fall semester.

There are a few prerequisites for symphonic band. First, symphonic band will be held 2nd period, and concert band will be held 1st period. Students interested in being in either of the groups must be able to adjust their schedule if it differs from their current band class. Students with difficult schedules need to discuss their situation with Mr. James, and some exceptions can be made. Second, students interested in symphonic band must be able to attend one night rehearsal per week. The symphonic band night rehearsals are Mondays from 5:30pm-7:30pm. Concert band will have afternoon rehearsals on Wednesdays from 3:00-4:30pm. The symphonic band and concert band will perform at two festivals, the spring concert, and the RUSD Band and Choir Festival.

Concert dress is required for both symphonic band and concert band. Male: Black sport coat, black dress pants, white button-down colored shirt, bow tie, black socks and black dress shoes. It should look like a tuxedo. Female: Black full-length dress, or long black skirt (the length of the skirt must go to the ankle) and black blouse, black hose, and black dress shoes. “Tuxedo Discounters” has very reasonably priced tuxedos, and below you may find their information for your convenience. Pep Band

Each student will be required to perform at one RHS varsity basketball game. Students will be given credit for one performance-100 points. Mr. James will select students for each game based upon proper instrumentation needed to achieve a full band sound.
